Doctor Who, Season 7, Ep. 5 "The Angels Take Manhattan"

This is definitely the best episode of this season and is a strong competitor for top spot of the entire reboot. I loved the pacing and felt the story remained even throughout the entire episode unlike previous episodes this season which seemed to have certain weaknesses. The angels were truly frightening and I may never look at statues the same again, especially cherubs!

Like the angels in Blink, these angels also use their time displacement ability to feed. However, unlike Blink these angels are strong, cunning, and have set up shop which makes them more menacing and scary to me than the ones in Blink if you can imagine that. If you loved the Blink episode you will most likely enjoy this one as well.

The episode starts off with an off screen narrator typing and reading aloud a pulp fiction story about a private investigator being hired to investigate moving statues. Of course he doesn't believe his boss but takes the money anyway and goes to check out this very creepy building complete with auto opening door. Dunno about you but I'd flee at that point! Spoiler stuff happens... (watch the episode!)

We then cut to the Doctor reading a book out loud much to Amy's frustration. After several humorous exchanges things get darker when the book makes a reference to the Doctor and Amy... ooo! I love how this fictional book gets integrated into the story and becomes threatening. And more spoilers... (watch the episode!)

This episode had everything in equally good measures - humor, meaningful character interactions, beautiful locations, dark and scary atmosphere complete with a creeky floor, believable and scary villains, great twisty plot elements, and a payoff for the Ponds' love of one another as well as how their sendoff devastates the Doctor.

This is an awesome and fitting tribute to the Ponds and you'll probably want tissues if you are remotely human.

The pulp fiction like book featured in this episode is going to be published by BBC Books Oct 4, 2012 as an ebook titled:
'The Angel's Kiss: A Melody Malone Mystery'
